About my art

I made these protest signs for the July show at the Colab Gallery in Raleigh. The theme for this month is "Protest Art". Over the past few years, I've made several signs for protests rallies. I made one that reads, "Amigo=Friend, Trump=Pendejo".  I made two more for the Haitian and Syrian immigrants affected by Trump's termination of TPS (Temporary Protected Status).

"TPS" are temporary humanitarian protections that allow Haitian, Syrian, and other immigrants to remain in the United States because conditions in their countries are deemed too dangerous for them to return.

A June 25, 2026, Supreme Court ruling, sided with Trump and is expected to affect approximately 1.3 million immigrants from 17 countries who hold what is known as temporary protected status, or TPS.

In Spanish a “Pendejo” is an asshole, idiot, or dumbass.

In Haitian culture a “Bourik” is a stuborn, ill-mannered jackass.

In Syria a “Haqeer” is a mean-despicable lowlife.

These signs are $100 each.

I can also make custom signs or help you make your own if you promise to take it to a protest rally.

I made this for the August show at the Colab Gallery in Raleigh. This Colab theme is unusual. They're calling it "Theme Roulette". Here's how it worked, local artists sent in a theme idea, the Colab shuffled the themes and everyone that sent in a theme got a randomly chosen theme to make art for the August Colab gallery show.

The theme I got is pretty interesting and basically about "Dreaming" (Dreamological Pathways: an exploration of how brains form pathways and invite us into the world of dreaming) Thankfully this is a very open ended theme and all the Colab people are also totally open. They said you can stick closely to the theme or you can do whatever you want!! I tried to do something abstract and ended up with a paint splattered road map with chicken wire on it so I gave up on trying to find my dream pathway for this project and I went political instead. The constant attempts to destroy democracy and crush the American Dream is all I can think about lately.

I tried to do something more with the "Dreaming" theme but I guess I had a hard time because I don't remember most of my dreams. I sometimes recall bits and pieces right after I wake up but as the day goes along the memory fades. When I was working on this project I thought maybe when I have a dream that I remember I should jot some notes about it. When I thought about doing this I remembered that most of my dreams are fragmented bits of bad brain junk that I probably don't wanna remember. I don't wanna be distracted by my nightmares. I only wanna remember the good brain junk dreams so maybe the next time I have one of those it will inspire me to do something that is bright and positive and a little easier on the eyes. It could happen. As the Tom Waits song goes, "You're innocent when you dream".

The stars in the lower right suggest an upside-down US flag. The U.S. flag code, which is not legally enforceable, says explicitly that the flag is not to be inverted “except as a signal of dire distress in an instance of extreme danger to life or property.” We're currently in a real instance of dire distress.

Another common distress signal is an orange flag with a black square and a black ball. It can be used as an alternative distress signal when other methods fail.

The gold tinfoil coin is a chocolate candy wrapper. The chocolate wasn't very good but the wrapper worked for this project.

The torn newsprint in the background is the May 2017 cover article that the Indy Week ran when NC Senator Richard Burr sided with Trump and said that "He wont let the Trump-Russia investigation turn into a which hunt."

This is my second version of this piece. My first version was used for the CD cover design that I did for Tin Whiskers 2017 album "Plans for a Gong".
